Major sites such as the Grand Palace check dress at the gate and will turn visitors away, so carry a light scarf or long sarong if you are dressed for the heat.

Intercity buses reach almost every province and are the cheapest option. From Bangkok, northern and northeastern routes leave from Mo Chit, eastern routes from Ekkamai, and southern routes from the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai). Long-distance trains run from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, and budget airlines fly domestic routes from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports.

Carry cash. Cards work in malls, hotels, and chain restaurants, but street food, markets, songthaews, and many temple entry fees are cash only. Thai ATMs usually charge foreign cards a flat fee of around 220–250 baht per withdrawal on top of your own bank's charges, so withdraw larger amounts less often.

Tipping is appreciated but not required. Many sit-down restaurants already add a 10% service charge plus 7% VAT to the bill. At places without a service charge, leaving the small change or rounding up is normal, and a modest tip for massage therapists, guides, and drivers is customary.
