Most visitors leave before sunset — the hour after is when the porcelain spires really come alive against the Chao Phraya sky.
Why the hour after sunset matters
Wat Arun's central prang is covered in fragments of Chinese porcelain — millions of pieces set into the stucco by hand. In flat midday light they read as texture. In the warm, low light just after sunset, each shard catches a different color, and the whole tower seems to glow from inside.
The temple grounds close at 6 PM, but here's the secret: the best view was never from inside. Cross the river to the Tha Tien side, find a riverside bench or rooftop bar, and watch the floodlights come on at dusk.
Getting there and timing it right
Take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Tien Pier (N8), then the cross-river ferry — it runs until around 8 PM and costs a few baht. If you want photos from inside the compound, arrive by 4:30 PM, buy the ticket, and work your way up the steep steps of the prang before the light turns.
Avoid weekends if you can. On weekday evenings the riverside is surprisingly calm, shared mostly with locals finishing their commute by boat.
