You board at Mo Chit 2 in the evening and wake up in the northeast with a day and a hotel night saved. Here is how the trip actually runs.
The overnight bus is the one piece of Thai travel infrastructure that foreign visitors consistently underuse.
It costs a fraction of a flight, it removes a hotel night from the budget, and on the Bangkok–Udon Thani run it puts you in the northeast at breakfast with the whole day still ahead of you.
Where you leave from
Mo Chit 2 is Bangkok's terminal for northern and northeastern buses — officially the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak), universally called Mo Chit Mai — and it is where the Udon Thani services depart. It is not the same place as BTS Mo Chit station; budget fifteen to twenty minutes and a short taxi or motorbike ride from the station to the terminal.
Inside the building, the Isaan route counters are on the third floor. The northern routes are on the first. Nobody tells visitors this and the signage assumes you already know, so if you have walked into a hall full of counters for Chiang Mai, you are on the wrong floor.
Nakhonchai Air runs from its own terminal on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road, separate from Mo Chit 2, with its own counters, kiosks and waiting lounge — and a free shuttle bus from the BTS Mo Chit area. NCA also sells from Mo Chit 2 and boards there at bays around 105 to 110. If you book NCA online, read which of the two your ticket says.
Mo Chit 2 sits a short taxi ride from Chatuchak Weekend Market, which is worth knowing if your bus arrives back in Bangkok on a Saturday or Sunday morning.
Which class to book
Thai coaches carry a legal class code, and on an eight-hour night run it is the code that matters, not the trade name.
| Class | Sold as | Layout | Toilet | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ม.1ก | VIP 24 | 1+2 | Yes | Sleeping — the single-seat row is the reason to pay more |
| ม.1พ | VIP 32 | 2+2 | Yes | A middle option, still comfortable |
| ม.4ข | Por 1, double-deck | 2+2 | Yes | Cheaper, more seats, more movement |
| ม.2 / ม.4ค | Por 2 | 2+2 | No | Budget only — no toilet on board |
For an overnight service, book ม.1ก if it runs on your departure. The 1+2 layout means a solo traveller gets a seat with no neighbour, and the recline is the difference between sleeping and enduring. The full class system is worth ten minutes if you are going to do this more than once.
Fares on this route run roughly 473 to 986 baht depending on class and operator, which is the whole argument in one line: the cheapest seat and the best seat are about 500 baht apart, on a journey you are spending the night on.
Who runs it
Transport Co. Ltd — บขส., the state operator — plus Nakhonchai Air, Sawasdee Isaan, Air Udon, 407 Pattana, Butsrakaem Tour and Isaan Tour. Nakhonchai Air markets Gold Class and First Class on this corridor and is the operator most Thai travellers name first.
The journey is about eight hours in normal conditions. Treat that as typical rather than guaranteed — it is a road, and roads have traffic.
How the night goes
Evening departures cluster from around 19:00 to 22:00. Buses are heavily air-conditioned; some classes hand out a blanket and you should not count on yours being one of them.
Expect one rest stop at a roadside restaurant, usually somewhere near the halfway mark, lasting long enough for the toilet and a bowl of something. The staff will announce a departure time. Take it literally — the bus leaves on it.
You will arrive in Udon Thani early, often well before a hotel will let you check in. Plan for that: a breakfast place, a left-luggage arrangement, or a first stop that opens early. Ban Chiang opens at nine and is fifty kilometres east, which makes a 6am arrival into an advantage rather than a problem.
Booking it
- Search the route and date on a booking platform — BusAndVan, ThaiRoute and BusX all cover this corridor, and Transport Co. and Nakhonchai Air both sell direct.
- Compare by class code, not by the words VIP or Premium.
- Check the boarding point carefully. Mo Chit 2 and the NCA terminal are different places.
- Pick your seat. Avoid the back row near the toilet, and the very front upstairs on a double-decker if you sleep badly with a view.
- Enter your name exactly as it appears on the passport or ID you will travel with.
- Save the e-ticket offline. Terminal signal is poor and the queue does not wait.
What to bring
A warm layer. An eye mask. A power bank. Motion sickness tablets if you need them. A small bag with everything valuable in it that stays at your seat — larger luggage goes into the hold and you get a tag for it.
The one thing people forget: something to eat. The rest stop is not guaranteed to be at an hour when you want food, and there is nothing on board.
